Barreiro was historically an industrial town and is renewing its waterfront. The Lisbon connection is by ferry and train, while the Tagus bridges link by road. For comparison, Almada and Corroios are on the same south bank and Setúbal is further down the peninsula. Lisbon, Amadora and Odivelas are on the opposite bank, so they are separate markets.
Since 2026 non-residents pay a flat 7.5% IMT, on top of stamp duty, notary and registry fees; verify the current rates. A Portuguese lawyer can review the licence of use, cadastral extract and any mortgages on the property. No golden visa is available for property purchases since October 2023.

The ferry crossing to Lisbon takes around half an hour and the train links the town to Setúbal and the south, which gives Barreiro a distinct commuter appeal. Regeneration of former industrial land along the waterfront has been discussed for years, but delivery timelines can shift, so do not price in future improvements. Local flats can be good value, but check the building's maintenance, lifts and exposure to river humidity.
