A lakeside town

Lake Taupō is the country's largest lake, with Tongariro National Park, ski fields, hot springs and trout fishing nearby. The town is a holiday hub for Aucklanders and Wellingtonians, but also a year-round community. Geothermal activity and earthquakes are part of the landscape, so get a builder's report and check insurance cover. Tourism shapes short-term rental demand.

Overseas buyers in New Zealand

New Zealand bans most overseas buyers from buying existing homes. Australian and Singaporean citizens are exempt, and permanent residents can buy under normal rules, but most other foreigners cannot. Since 6 March 2026, Active Investor Plus visa holders can buy one home above NZ$5 million with consent, which is well above Taupo's usual price. New-build apartments in approved developments may be open to overseas buyers, so check each case with a New Zealand lawyer. See our New Zealand buying guide and financing page.

Other North Island markets

These are separate markets, not Taupo's neighbours: Tauranga, Hamilton, Napier, Hastings and Whakatane. See the New Zealand overview.
