Monthey is an industrial and commercial town in the Chablais region of the Valais, at the foot of the Val d'Illiez. The area has a long chemicals and manufacturing history, which supports local employment. It is a short drive from the Rhône valley motorway, the Lake Geneva shore around Villeneuve and Montreux, and the Portes du Soleil ski area.
That combination attracts commuters who work in the Riviera or Lausanne and want lower prices, plus people seeking access to winter sports without resort premiums.
Switzerland limits purchases by non-residents under the Lex Koller rules. Non-EU residents without a settled permit, and people living abroad, generally cannot buy a main or second home outside designated tourist developments. Permit holders who live in Switzerland can usually buy their own residence. Rules also differ by canton, so confirm your position with a Swiss notary before making an offer.
Buying costs include notary and land registry fees, cantonal transfer duty, and possibly property gains tax for the seller. See the Switzerland buying guide and mortgage guide for more.

Only if permitted by Swiss law. Non-resident foreigners are heavily restricted, while some residents with permits can buy their own home. Ask a notary to confirm your status first.
Typically yes. With a median of €698,267 and €5,833 per m² in our data, it is a lower entry point than the lakeside, but check the Montreux page for exact figures.
Swiss lenders normally want at least 20% of the price in equity, and part of it must not come from pension funds. Foreigners may be offered lower loan-to-value ratios. See our financing guide.
Monthey's industrial base means offices, workshops and mixed-use buildings make up 21 of 76 listings. Filter for residential types if you want a home.
