Timaru is a port city on the South Canterbury coast, about two to two and a half hours' drive south of Christchurch, with Aoraki and the Mackenzie Basin inland. It has a working harbour, a historic centre and a more relaxed pace than the big cities. Christchurch is a distinct, larger market rather than a neighbour; compare it with Christchurch, Auckland and Waikato.
New Zealand bans overseas buyers from purchasing existing homes. Citizens and residents of Australia and Singapore are exempt under trade agreements, as are New Zealand citizens and residents. Since 6 March 2026, Active Investor Plus holders may buy one home above NZ$5m with consent. Most other foreigners are limited to certain new-build routes, so take legal advice before offering on anything.
