The island
Thassos lies off the coast of northern Greece, reached by ferry from the mainland port area near Kavala. The main town is Limenas, and the island has beach villages such as Potos and Skala Potamia. The season is summer-heavy, so many shops and restaurants close in winter. Kavala is the mainland gateway, while Kassandra is on Halkidiki and Athens is the capital; both are comparisons and not neighbours.
