Alblasserdam lies on the Noord river in the Drechtsteden area, a short distance from the Kinderdijk windmills, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and between Rotterdam and Dordrecht. It has a shipbuilding and industrial tradition. Neighbouring markets: Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Ridderkerk, Papendrecht, Zwijndrecht, Dordrecht and Krimpen aan den IJssel. River location means a check on flood defences and subsoil for older houses.
Buyers tend to be families and commuters working in Rotterdam, Dordrecht or the port, who prefer a terraced or semi-detached house with a garden to a small city flat. At €4,293 per m², Alblasserdam is lower than the Rotterdam core. Pre-1975 houses can lack cavity insulation, and many are being upgraded because of energy-label rules. Ask for the energy label, the association of owners' (VvE) records for any apartment, and the property tax (OZB) assessment.
Foreign buyers are free to purchase. Transfer tax is 2% for a home you occupy and 8% for other homes. You pay a notary and typically a valuation, and a buyer's agent is optional. A cooling-off period of three days follows signing. Make the purchase conditional on financing if you need a mortgage.

Compare with the Dordrecht page. Alblasserdam's median per m² is €4,293. Dordrecht has more urban amenities and its own station, so prices differ.
Older houses on soft delta soil can have foundation problems. A building survey is a sensible precaution. Look for cracks, uneven floors and past repairs, and ask the seller for a survey history.
Yes, but the transfer tax is 8%, and local rental rules apply. Check them before buying. Check municipal rental rules before relying on rent.
Only 8 of 76, so apartment buyers may prefer Rotterdam or Dordrecht. Ridderkerk and Papendrecht are also worth checking for apartments.
