Central Nova Scotia

Truro is known as the hub of the province because major highways and rail routes meet there. It has a college, a hospital and shopping, and Halifax lies about an hour south. Markets in the Halifax area, including Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Hammonds Plains and Middle Sackville, are separate and pricier. New Glasgow is another regional town.

A central location gives Truro the practical advantages of Halifax without its prices.

Services and commuting

Truro has the Nova Scotia Agricultural College campus (now part of Dalhousie), regional hospital services, a rail line and Highway 102 towards Halifax, which makes it feasible, though long, to commute. Colchester County offers tidal bore viewing on the Salmon River and access to the Bay of Fundy shoreline.

Older streets close to downtown have character homes, while newer subdivisions lie on the edge of town. Heating cost is a recurring theme: ask for oil, electricity and heat-pump bills from the last winter.

What to know

Nova Scotia has its own rules on land ownership and property tax for non-residents, and the federal foreign-buyer ban runs to 1 January 2027, so ask a local lawyer about both. Heating oil tanks and old wiring are common issues in older homes. The Canada buying guide, financing page and Canada overview give more detail.
