The setting

Paris sits where the Nith River meets the Grand River, with a downtown of limestone buildings, bridges, and riverside trails. It markets itself as one of the prettiest small towns in Canada. It lies roughly 100 km west of Toronto, within reach of Hamilton and the Golden Horseshoe, so it appeals to hybrid workers and retirees who want a smaller town.

Nearby places include Brantford, the regional city; Brant, the county; Cambridge, Kitchener, Woodstock and Waterford in southwestern Ontario, each a short to medium drive away. The Ontario town of Cambridge is not the English city of the same name.

Rules for overseas buyers

Two layers of restriction sit on a purchase by a non-Canadian here. Ottawa's prohibition on residential purchases by foreign buyers lasts until 1 January 2027, and a successor framework has been reported but not confirmed. On top, Ontario's 25% non-resident speculation tax can apply to foreign nationals unless an exemption fits. Land transfer tax and legal fees are separate.

For older stone homes, order an inspection that covers foundations, wiring and heating. For river-front lots, ask about floodplain regulations from the conservation authority. See the Canada page, financing and consultation guides.
