Buyer's guide: Turin

Apartments account for 679 listings, houses 120, villas 63, commercial 24, penthouses 11 and studios two. The largest bedroom group is five or more bedrooms (275 listings), then three-bed (211) and four-bed (201). These are classic Turin apartments in 19th- and early 20th-century buildings, with high ceilings and room counts that would be unaffordable elsewhere.
The lower quartile sits at €100,000, so there are some seriously cheap flats; many need renovation or have service charges (spese condominiali) that you should examine closely.
Turin has arcaded boulevards, the Egyptian Museum, a large university and polytechnic, and a car-making legacy that now includes design and tech employers. Crocetta and Centro are the traditional prime districts, San Salvario and Vanchiglia are lively and student-heavy, and Lingotto is the former Fiat factory area with shops and a convention centre.
The Alps are close, so skiing is an hour or so away, and the Langhe wine hills lie to the south. Compare other northern options such as Milan and mountain towns such as Trento.
Turin's headline price is low; the real question is the condition of a 100-year-old building and its heating system.

Slower population growth and a less international economy, offset by a large stock of older, bigger flats.
Only two are listed; the market is dominated by multi-room family flats.
Many do. Check wiring, heating and facades, which may require shared condominium works.
Student and professional demand exists. Lower prices can mean higher gross yields than in Milan, but verify rents locally.
