Chieti has two faces. Chieti Alta is the historic upper town, with the cathedral, archaeological museum, Roman remains and views to the Maiella. Chieti Scalo is the newer lower town by the station, with university faculties, shops and more modern buildings, and it is better for commuting. The coast and its beaches, ski areas in the Gran Sasso and the Maiella national park are reachable within an hour. Public transport is basic outside the centre, so most owners use a car.
Compare Perugia, Campobasso and Aosta in other regions.
Foreigners may buy, sometimes subject to reciprocity. Hire a notary, obtain a tax code, and confirm the cadastral registration and energy certificate. Older buildings may need work, and condominium meeting minutes reveal planned costs. Closing fees include registration tax, notary and agency costs. See the Italy page, consultation and financing.
Steep streets and old stairwells in Chieti Alta can make moving furniture hard, and parking is limited inside the historic centre. In Chieti Scalo, check the age of the building and heating system, since many blocks date from the postwar decades. Heating costs can be high in cold Abruzzo winters, and the area lies in a seismic zone, so ask for seismic checks and insurance advice on older buildings.
