Buyer's guide: Svendborg
Svendborg is a harbour town on the south coast of Funen, facing the small islands of the South Funen archipelago, with a historic centre and a strong sailing culture. RealEstateAbroad currently lists 125 properties here with a median asking price of €347,208, mostly detached villas. Denmark restricts purchases by non-residents, so the legal checks come first.

In Danish listings, 'villa' means a detached single-family house. Villas account for 95 of the 125 listings, apartments 15, other houses 8 and plots 7. Large homes dominate: 59 listings have five or more bedrooms, 41 have four, 21 have three and only 2 have two.
The upper quartile above €668,000 reflects waterside and thatched properties, while the lower end includes older houses needing renovation. See Denmark villa listings and Denmark house listings for the national view.
Svendborg has a pedestrianised centre, a marina, ferry links to Ærø and nearby islands such as Tåsinge and Thurø, and a well-known maritime school. The surrounding countryside is dotted with farms, beaches and woodland. Odense, Denmark's third-largest city, is about 45 km north by road, so some residents commute. Many buyers are Danes drawn by the harbour lifestyle and lower prices than in Copenhagen, together with Germans, who also look at the area for holiday use.
Svendborg offers more space per euro than most Danish markets, but foreigners face the strictest permission rules in northern Europe.
Non-Danish residents need permission from the Ministry of Justice to buy a property in Denmark, and holiday homes are the hardest category to secure. EU citizens living in Denmark or working there are treated differently, so check your status first.

Faaborg is a smaller harbour town on the same coast, and Nyborg and Odense lie to the north. Otterup is on Funen's north coast. Korsør and Sønderborg are across the water, in different regions. See the Denmark page.

Non-residents need Danish Ministry of Justice permission, and holiday homes are the hardest to obtain. Residents and some EU workers are treated differently, so a lawyer should confirm your position.
€347,208 across our 125 current listings, with the middle half between €240,169 and €668,326. These are asking prices converted from Danish kroner.
Roughly 45 km, around 45 minutes by road. There are also regional train links.
A villa in Denmark is a detached family house. Funen's smaller towns are mainly low-rise housing with few apartment blocks.
It is attractive for sailing and coast, but because holiday-home permissions are tightly controlled for non-residents, check eligibility before you pay a deposit.
