Faaborg is a harbour town with a historic centre, a museum and ferries to small islands, set among orchards and hills in the south of Funen. Svendborg is the nearest larger town, and Odense is the island's city. Nyborg, Otterup, Sønderborg and Haderslev are separate markets. Buyers include retirees and those wanting a low-cost Danish base.
Cheap by Danish standards, but outside the cities, resale can be slow.
South Funen is known as the garden of Denmark for its orchards and smooth countryside, and Faaborg's harbour offers ferries to small islands such as Ærø-bound routes and Lyø and Avernakø. The town has a museum of Funen painters and a gentle holiday atmosphere in summer. Because prices are low, running costs matter more than the purchase: ask for heating bills, as older villas rely on oil or heat pumps, and check the roof and damp. Local building rules protect the historic centre, so renovation permits may be needed.
Anyone not resident in Denmark needs Ministry of Justice permission to buy, and holiday homes are almost always the most difficult category. The deed registration fee is DKK 1,850 plus 0.6% of the price. The seller supplies a condition report and often a building inspection, which a lawyer should read for you. Further detail is in the Denmark buying guide, the financing guide and the Denmark overview.
