Buyer's guide: Hjørring

Villas number 102, houses 30, plots 18 and apartments 5. Large homes dominate: 68 have five or more bedrooms, 47 have four, 27 have three, 7 have two and 1 has one. Compared with Slagelse or Kolding, prices per square metre here are lower.
See Danish villas and land.
With so many five-bedroom-plus homes at modest prices, the market suits large families or buyers wanting a workshop, outbuildings or room for guests. Older farm properties around the town can be larger still, but heating costs and renovation needs rise with size, so ask for the energy label and condition report early.
Hjørring has a shopping centre, a hospital and a train link on the line to Frederikshavn and Aalborg. The coast at Løkken is known for its wide sandy beaches and summer houses. Hirtshals, with its ferry to Norway, and Skagen at Denmark's northern tip are within reach.
Winters are windy, and buyers are mostly local families. Summer-house areas on the coast are zoned separately and belong to a different market with stricter foreign rules.
Foreigners not living in Denmark need Ministry of Justice permission, and holiday homes are the hardest to approve. Given that North Jutland's coast is full of summer homes, be clear about whether you intend to live there permanently.
Our Denmark buying guide lays out the process, the Denmark financing page covers funding, and the Denmark overview has national figures.
Løkken and Sæby are coastal towns, Brønderslev, Aabybro and Frederikshavn are inland or east, and Nørresundby sits by Aalborg.
