Houses account for 216 listings, land for 16 and apartments for just 6. Bedrooms are skewed to family homes: 81 listings have three bedrooms, 63 have four, 58 have five or more and 20 have two. If you want a condo, browse apartments in the United States; for a lot to build on, see land. Most buyers here want a detached house with a garden and a garage.
Matthews sits on the south-east side of Charlotte in Union County. It has a walkable historic downtown with a farmers' market, plus a lot of newer subdivisions and golf-course communities further out. Charlotte's banking and energy employers, the airport and the light-rail network are all within a drive, which attracts relocating professionals and families.
The typical purchase is a four-bedroom home in an HOA-managed neighbourhood. Compared with Charlotte's inner neighbourhoods, you pay less per square metre (€2,341) and get a larger house, but you rely on a car.
Foreigners can generally buy real estate in the United States without a visa, and financing is available from lenders who specialise in foreign nationals, usually with larger down payments. Closing costs are commonly a few percent of the price, and annual property tax in North Carolina is set by county and city rates, so check the exact bill. If you resell, the FIRPTA rule withholds 15% of the price for foreign sellers unless an exemption applies (10% or 0% for qualifying residence purchases up to $1m or $300k).
Insurance, HOA fees and inspections matter more than agents suggest. Our US buying guide and US financing page go through the details, and the wider market is on the United States page.
Compare other Charlotte-area towns such as Charlotte, Huntersville, Concord and Mooresville. Further afield in the Piedmont are Winston Salem and Greensboro.

It is a typical suburban family market, with detached houses, four-bedroom layouts and neighbourhood amenities. Check school assignments for individual addresses.
Some US lenders do lend to non-residents, but expect larger deposits and extra documentation. Our mortgage calculator can help you test numbers.
County property tax, home insurance, HOA fees where applicable and maintenance. Ask each seller for a recent tax bill.
Very few. Only 6 of 238 listings are apartments, so the market is mainly houses.
