Gilroy is known as the garlic capital of the United States and hosts a large outlet shopping centre and a theme park. It sits on Highway 101 about 50 km south of San Jose, with commuter rail running to San Jose and on to San Francisco, though journey times are long. Summers are hot and dry, and the surrounding hills can bring wildfire smoke.
Buyers are commuters willing to trade drive time for space, and families who want a yard. Morgan Hill is the closest neighbour and a slightly pricier option, while Los Gatos is a premium Silicon Valley town. Over the Santa Cruz Mountains, Watsonville, Aptos and Santa Cruz are coastal markets, and Salinas lies in the agricultural Salinas Valley.
