Fanø lies just off the coast near Esbjerg and is reached by a short ferry crossing. It has a wide sandy beach, the old seafaring village of Sønderho and the main town Nordby. The island is known for kite-flying and car-free beaches in places, and summer brings the bulk of visitors. Ferry timetables and costs affect daily life if you work on the mainland.
An island home carries extra costs and logistics. Check who maintains the road to the house, whether the plot is in a dune-protection or Natura 2000 area, and how storm surges have affected the street. Winter heating bills in a draughty summer house can be high, so ask for energy labels and bills. Summer-house zones often limit the number of days of residence per year, and letting agents charge commission, so request the rental history of any property marketed as an income source.
Non-residents need permission from the Ministry of Justice to buy property in Denmark, and holiday homes are the hardest category. Island summer-house areas often also restrict year-round occupation. Some buyers who have lived in Denmark may be exempt, so check your status before paying a deposit. Use a Danish lawyer.
See our Denmark buying guide and financing page.
The suggested links, Copenhagen, Odense and Aalborg, are not neighbours of Fanø. They are separate, city markets. See Denmark.

Only with Ministry of Justice permission, and holiday homes are the hardest category to obtain. Check whether an exemption applies to you before you pay a deposit.
The ferry adds time and cost, so check schedules and fares for year-round use. If you work on the mainland, the crossing can make daily commuting impractical.
Many listings have four or more bedrooms, with 18 four-bedroom and 17 five-plus bedroom homes among 50. Smaller cottages are less common.
No, the island is quiet outside summer, and some services close for the winter. Visit in November to see the place out of season.
