Nurmijärvi is a municipality about 30 km north of Helsinki with a population of roughly 44,000. Its largest centre is Klaukkala, a commuter suburb with shops, schools and new housing estates. Other settlements include the old village centre, Rajamäki, home to the Altia/Alko distillery, and Röykkä. The author Aleksis Kivi, who wrote the novel Seven Brothers, was born in the municipality.
Commuting to Helsinki is mainly by car or bus, and journeys take around 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic, as there is no direct rail service into the municipality. Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is within about 30 minutes by road.
Buyers are mostly young families priced out of Helsinki and Espoo, with some remote workers. For the capital markets, compare Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa; for other regions look at Tampere, Turku and Oulu.
Non-EU and EU citizens can usually buy property in Finland without a permit. Exceptions apply in Åland and for certain areas near defence sites.
For houses, request the kuntotarkastus (condition inspection) and ask about septic systems if the property is not on municipal water. See our Finland consultation guide, the financing guide and the Finland overview. Budget buyers can browse cheap Finland property.
Klaukkala has a full range of Finnish-language schools and daycare, and Finland's public school system is well regarded; English-medium options are mainly in Helsinki and Espoo, a drive away. Services such as health centres, libraries and grocery chains are plentiful in the larger villages, but smaller settlements are more car-dependent. Winter commuting can be slow when snow falls, and many families own two cars. When viewing, ask neighbours about road noise from the main routes towards Helsinki, and look at municipal plans for new estates, which will change traffic and views. The surrounding fields and forests are good for skiing, cycling and berry picking.
Many family homes use district heating, geothermal heat, electric heating or wood. Ask for annual bills and the age of the system. Winter lasts long, so insulation, a snow-ready driveway and a sauna with sound maintenance are standard considerations. Use the mortgage calculator to plan the loan.
