Houses in Australia
Houses dominate Australian listings on RealEstateAbroad: 7,623 of 8,652 properties, or roughly 88%. That reflects the country's detached-home culture, and it also means the rules for foreign buyers, which are strict on established houses, shape almost every search.
Across all Australian property types, listings on RealEstateAbroad show a median asking price of €428,305, with the middle half between €294,848 and €605,214. The median asking price per square metre is €2,776. These are asking prices converted to euros, not completed sales, and big-city detached houses in Sydney or Melbourne generally sit well above the national figures.
The country-wide bedroom split gives a sense of the stock: 3,078 listings have three bedrooms and 2,369 have four, with 680 at five or more and only 485 at one bedroom.
Australia regulates foreign purchases through the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB). In general, foreign persons can buy new dwellings and vacant land (with an obligation to build within a set period) with approval, but buying an established house has been restricted or banned for most non-residents under temporary rules. States and territories also add surcharges to stamp duty and land tax for foreign owners. These rules have changed several times and carry penalties for breaches, so confirm the current position with an Australian solicitor before you bid. Our Australia buying guide covers the process.
The only city page we link for Australia at the moment is Surfers Paradise, where the Gold Coast mixes beachfront towers with canal-side houses. For other regions, start from the Australia overview. If you are comparing building types, see apartments or land for new-build routes that are easier for non-residents.
Residents and citizens make up most buyers. Foreign buyers who qualify often target new builds, buy through investment visas or purchase with resident family members.

Usually only with FIRB approval, and established homes have been closed to most foreign buyers under temporary rules. New dwellings and vacant land are the typical routes. Check the latest rules with a solicitor.
The median across all Australian listings is €428,305, with a middle range of €294,848 to €605,214. Expect big-city houses to cost more.
Many foreign buyers use one, since lenders set stricter deposits and income rules for non-residents. Start with the financing guide.
By auction or private sale. At auction, there is no cooling-off period, so inspections and finance must be sorted first.
Our listings data for Australia is concentrated in a small number of locations, so only Surfers Paradise has its own page for now.
